For Alcoholics change is the hard, I can become so ridged in my thoughts even in sobriety that I forget the 2nd principle of staying open minded. I want people and things to change at my pace and will, thus thowing out eveything I should watch out for at any given moment. The gift of recovery comes about by understanding that I have the power of choice, which gives me the power to change. I have experienced tremendous changes in my life and overcome many obstacles, except the ability to get over me. I must continue to remember the change comes about by the awareness that I AM NOT IN CHARGE of anything or anyone except having the willness to change. Hard lesson that I must remember no matter how long I trudge this road. That’s why I must not just work the steps, but live the steps, its the only chance I have to change. For me the fact of my sobriety is that it is a gift, and I am one of the lucky ones. I have had so many good friends that have passed on, some sober some not, but I have to remember that I am blessed. When I made that decision to trust the Power I had no idea of the incredible journey I began. Here I stand 2 & 1/2 decades later in awe of the grace that has been bestowed on me, by those who laid the foundation and God’s power. I am not a religionist but in the book my family lived by and I’ve read, it says to “build your house on rock,” and how true that is for those who build their foundation on the principles, that are the rules of spiritual directions, for those who are of the hopeless variety like myself. This foundation has saved me countless times, led me through the shadows of death, and teach me to fear no evil. That’s what recovery means to me. I have been handed the keys to the kingdom, and so have countless others. If you’re new, STAY, and you will find a life beyond you wildest dreams and imaginations, but you must ride the roller coaster first, and have all that crap that lives in you, be flushed out in to the drainage of abuse, into the stream of clear waters that flow through the steps, principles, traditions, and concepts of service.
