There were times that I thought alcohol was my best friend, my lover, my protector, my higher Power, and it was all those things. It was the friend I thought was always going to be there for me , but turned out to be the one with the loaded gun. It was the lover I had always fantasized, but turned out to be the cheater, liar, ruthless partner that brought me tears and sorrowful cries of Self pity. It thought that it would protect me against any emotional situation that came my way, but made me vulnerable and helpless. It was my Spiritual connection, but the connection was to the darker side of my self. These are some of the things that were part of the illusion of the alcoholic mind. Honesty and coming to believe, were the two greatest awarenesses of breaking the walls of denial of this alcoholic.
