When I first came into recovery I heard this man speak and related to his share. After the meeting I walked up to him and asked him to sponsor me. He first asked me “are you willing to go to any length for your recovery.” My quick response was yes, with out knowing what that was. When I started working with him, one of the first things he said to me was ” always look for the solution.” Since those first days and conversations I had with him, I have always been looking for the solution in all of my challenges, fears, uneasiness, and even my joys. It says in the readings that we practice the principles in all our affairs. The principles have always shown me the solutions, if I work for the solution. If your new always look for the solution and remember “we” are the problem. What is the solution for you to find? For me it’s to seek a concious contact with a Power Greater than my problem, “Me.”

When I had 13 years sober I was in that place where the only thing that stood between the choices of drinking or suicide was God as I understood him. There seemed to be no choice, but I did what I had told many that I had spoken with over the years, that were in the same place I had come to. I picked up the phone and made the life saving call. I called someone I knew, and held deep respect for. As I told him honestly what my situation was, and what I kept coming up with, drink or kill myself. He listened quietly and then gave me a suggestion. He said “read chapter 3 in the big book, you need to reacquaint yourself with what you are, and what the solution is.” After hanging up the phone I read the chapter “More about Alcoholism.” After reading I contemplated this and tried to still myself. I turned on the television and the movie Castaway with Tom Hanks was on, there was a line in the movie were the lead character was talking with his friend after being rescued, explaining to him that he had lost all hope and was trying to end his life, and failed at that. As he was looking out at the sea and saw the waves coming in, it came to him that all he could do was just breathe and let the waves roll in, and then the miracle of the material allowing him to make a sail floated in. So if your in that place where you’ve lost hope and don’t know the solution. Pick up the phone and talk to another Alcoholic and learn about what you are and how to solve your best idea at that time. The answers to all our problems are in the big book, I know I have had to find the solutions many times, Love and peace.
