In the soul of all man, woman, and child, lies a need for love and care. I may be wrong about this, but I can only go by whats been shared and from my experience. Our hearts cry out for it, we will die for it, without it we grow in anger and hurt. Most of us react to the suffering of others sometimes reaching out, and then sometimes we close our eyes as though it would just not be there. Our instincts as humans us to have an inescapable need for community and bonding even the worst of us need others, for one purpose or the other. The 12 steps have taught me that nothing is possible alone, maybe in moments we can sustain but we were created to care for each other, it is necessary for survival. Ego and pride gives us the illusion that we need no one sometimes but no one is an island. The very reason we have survived is because of community. The Big Book teaches the isolated Alcoholic how to drop the walls, and unite with each other. It’s through Unity that we learn to serve and we find the healing in reaching out and lifting someone into the 4th dimension of love and service, the key of Spiritual living.
