The definition of conviction is to have “a fixed or firm belief.” For those who have reached that hopeless state of mind and body, that place of desperation, so need to find something to believe in. The “Big Book,” states that we MUST find a power greater than ourselves. This is where the steps become the instruments of helping us find that power, together with letting ourselves become a part of the process and the fellowship. These steps become the defined way out for the Alcoholic to recover 1 day at a time. The application of these principles leads us to a place of conviction, that this life is the only way out of that hopeless state of mind. Those of us that have come to understand, that we must continue the vigilance of utilizing these steps in all our affairs, is a testament that the power greater than us, has lead millions of us into a dimension of reality of love and service, and have given us “a fixed and firm belief” that this thing works it really does, and rarely see people fail who thoroughly follow the path that has been placed before us. May God keep us and continue to to bless us with the firm belief of the power of the 12 steps and principles.
